Visión general

The nuns live in strict seclusion and only the church can be visited. Classicist in style, the structure dates to the first half of the 17th century.

The monastery's accommodation features 16 beds in double rooms located on three floors. Baths are shared, one per floor. Both men and women are welcome, together only if married.

Historia

The monastery was founded in 1598 by a group of nuns who came from various Carmelite monasteries established by Santa Teresa de Ávila. The Calahorran townspeople wanted a symbolic presence of the saint in their town and the nuns honoured their request. The community was begun without the patronage of a noble or wealthy family. During the early years of their residency, the nuns lived in absolute poverty, supported solely by the local populace. At one point, Don José Gonzales de la Uzqueta (uncle of one of the nuns) proposed building a monastery and church if the nuns declared him their Patrono. They did. The structures were built and occupied by the nuns.
