Sant’Antonio.The story of the monastery begins with the martyrdom of Santa Giustina, one of the most venerated saints of Veneto. Giustina was arrested and martyred on October 7, 304. Her body was taken to a small cemetery close to Padua. Nearly a thousand years later, the Benedictine monks erected a new basilica above the primitive structure. In 1640 Santa Giustina’s body was buried under a magnificent altar, a masterpiece of Florentine artists.The church is a vast, imposing building, the largest church in Veneto. Ornamented by various cupolas, it shelters many works of art. The most important is the Sacello of Saint Prosdocimo, the votive chapel of the first Bishop of Padua.The Benedictine Order has been in residence since 730. Today they occupy three quarters, one of which is decorated with frescoes illustrating the life of Saint Benedict. There is a very rich library open to the public.
Meals are not offered with the lodging. Guests must arrange for meals outside the monastery.
Towels and linens are supplied on request but it is recommended that guests provide their own. Guests may join the monks during their liturgy. During the winter, however, women are not allowed to participate since the monks celebrate their liturgy in a chapel in a secluded area.
By car: Exit at Padova Est on highway A4 and follow the signs to Prato della Valle. Once in Prato della Valle ask for Santa Giustina.
By train: Get off at Padova and take bus #3, #8, #12 or #18.
