Histoire

It was founded by the eminent Victorian statesman William Ewart Gladstone. After his death in 1898, it was donated to the nation and became a tribute to his 63 years of active political life during which he became prime minister four times. A statue of Gladstone stands in the village.

Dinner, bed and breakfast are always supplied. There is a restaurant and coffee shop that can supply lunch and other refreshments.

Towels and linens are provided. There are conference and meeting facilities and a chapel. Guided tours of the library are available on the 2nd Saturday and 4th Tuesday of each month at 11.00 AM. Tickets are limited; booking is recommended. Cost: £2.00 per person.
