Histoire

It was the first Cistercian monastery to be founded in Scotland after the Reformation. The community inhabiting the Abbey originated from a group of monks from Mount St. Joseph Abbey in Roscrea, County Tipperary, Ireland. The monks came to Nunraw in 1946 and occupied Nunraw House, a Scottish mansion originally the site of the Convent of the Nuns of Haddington. That order was founded around 1153 by Countess Ada, widow of Prince Henry. After several vicissitudes, the land and mansion passed into private hands and was modified over the following centuries until the monks bought the mansion.
