Histoire

The first religious community of hermits settled here in the 12th century. The abbey was later inhabited by the Benedictine Order of Cluny followed by the Cistercian Order. During the 17th century, the importance of the monastery increased due in large measure to its position along the Santiago de Compostela Route. The monastery was the last addition to the original complex. At the time of the religious suppressions in 1836, the monks were forced to abandon the institution.

Continuing its centuries-old tradition, a portion of the monastery has been turned into a two-star hotel; a small section is reserved for the three dozen monks who live in seclusion. All masses are celebrated in Gregorian Chant performed by the monks; recordings are available for sale. Every morning and afternoon, tours of the monastery are conducted by the monks.
