In 1170 a group of Cistercian monks founded the Abbey in Stanlow, Cheshire. Due to frequent floods that afflicted the monastery, the monks moved to one of their properties in Lancashire and established a new abbey in Whalley in 1296. The entire complex including the abbey church, monastery and Abbot’s Lodging was not completed until 1440.
