Aperçu

The same order has inhabited the monastery from its inception, living in seclusion as they have always done. The Jerónimos monks are a small religious community intrinsic to Spain. There are only two monasteries inhabited by the order: San Jerónimo and Santa María del El Parral in Segovia.

There are two types of accommodation:

Outside the monastery: 8 single rooms, each with private bath. Both men and women are welcome.

Inside the monastery: 5 single rooms, each with private bath. Open exclusively to men willing to share the religious life of the monks.

Histoire

The fame of the monastery can be traced to the fact that Carlo V, Holy Roman Emperor lived on the monastery grounds for nearly two years after he abdicated the throne in 1556. Although he died in the monastery in 1558, his remains were later moved to the Escorial in Madrid. Among the most interesting features of the monastery are the apartments built by the king and the place where he spent the final years of his life. The rooms were designed so that the king, ill with gout, could remain seated while attending mass or enjoying the view of the nearby pond. The original furnishings have been preserved. Opera lovers will be intrigued by the fact that the king's residence was the setting of the first scene of Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi.

Restauration et Boissons

Espaces verts et alentours

The monastery is on the outskirts of Cuacos de Yuste, an old village in the wooded valley of La Vera. Its houses are characterized by red peppers which flank the doorways; the peppers are hung to dry before being used to make paprika. Every September 30th, a festival is held to honour San Jerónimo.
